This is Africa

Dear G adventures… this trip sucks…
NOT!

But 5:45 am IS a fucker!

Hi Everybody. I just got to Cape Town after spending the last 2 weeks on a G Adventure trip through Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa. It’s quite possible that these have been the best 2 weeks of my life. There were about 20 of us traveling on a bus (oops I mean truck!) with our super awesome guides Bongizwe and Marc. Each day we traveled through the beautiful countryside to our campsites where we set up our tents under the night sky littered with tons of sparkly stars. Each destination seemed to top the next. We saw Rhinos at the Khama Rhino Sanctuary, rode in traditional mokoro canoes through a water lily marsh, walked with zebras and giraffes in the Okavango Delta, camped under the shade of massive 5000 year old baobab trees, got soaked with mist at Victoria Falls, and spotted cheetahs and lions in Kruger Park.

I feel like I’ve been away for months since so much has happened even though it’s only been 2 weeks! So I’m just going to summarize my top 10 highlights for you. I think I’ll do 5 today and 5 tomorrow. Here they are!

1. Chobe River Cruise
My first moment of total amazement on this trip happened when we saw elephants swimming in the Chobe River near sunset. They were so big, there were so many, and they moved beautifully through the water, almost as if in slow motion as they swam.

2. Lions
Some of us were lucky enough to go on an excursion to walk with Lions. The lions at the center were juveniles being prepared for reintroduction into the wild to increase the lion population in Africa. Proceeds from the tour went to helping conservation efforts for the lion population. On the tour we were able to actually walk with the lions for about an hour and even pet them when they lay down for a rest!!! It was so thrilling to get close to them and actually touch a lion!
A few days later we spotted lions in the wild in Kruger Park (thanks Jocelyn!). Everyone piled over to one side of our truck to get a look at the mother with 2 cubs. It was a magical experience to see these lions in the wild after learning about their conservation at the center just days before.

3. Victoria Falls
Marc and Bongi told us we would get wet at Vic Falls, and they weren’t kidding. Most of us ignored the rain poncho stand, and just went for it. We ended up running over the trails adjacent the falls and realizing that the mist from the falls actually turned into pouring rain at certain spots! We all got soaked from head to toe, but it was welcome because it was so hot that day. To top it off there were rainbows all over the place!

4. Mokoro boat ride
We took traditional dugout canoes called mokoros into the Okavango Delta. It was  the ultimate in relaxation sitting back in the boat and taking in the beauty of the reeds and water lilies as our ‘poler’ (the boats are ‘driven’ using a long pole), expertly steered us to a wonderful campsite where we could hear the hippos at night splashing around in the river!

5. Cave paintings
I have been dying to see cave paintings since I missed so many opportunities to see them in Patagonia. Well, mission accomplished! We visited a beautiful cave in Zimbabwe where there were ochre and reddish images of hunters and animals painted on the walls. We learned about the traditional ways of the “little” bushmen who created the images. They were only 5 feet tall, lived off the land and could eat 6 lbs of meat in one sitting!

Stay tuned for part 2 tomorrow!

Oh, hi Prince Harry! My stopover in London

I was actually  kind of lucky to have a long stopover in London during my flight to South Africa. Thank you Expedia! So even though I was tempted to stay in the airport and take a nap after my red eye flight, I decided to go make the most of it, and I took the tube into downtown London!  There was even a guy on the subway singing and playing guitar for most of my ride.

I got off at Piccadilly Circus station, and emerged into the bustling big city full of beautiful monuments, statues, and historical architecture. It was a beautiful hot day so it was perfect for walking around to take in all the sights.

Piccadilly Circus

I walked through a park with tons of people, some cool birds and lots of nice flower gardens. I walked down to Buckingham Palace, and tried to tell them that I was here for my date with Prince Harry, but they didn't buy it. Dammit.

Buckingham Palace

Then I walked around and saw the London Eye, Big Ben and Westminster Abbey before heading back to the airport.

Right now I'm sitting outside of my lodge in Johannesburg waiting for my room to be ready, and we are heading off on the safari tomorrow! There are ostriches wandering around, and there are some little Impala like creatures running around too. It is pretty cool so far! Can't wait to see what the next few weeks have in store...

April Updates and Rufina and Chad's Dominican Wedding

Hi everybody. I know it's been a while since my last post from Costa Rica. Well, a lot has happened since then.

This year, 2013, was supposed to be my year of awesomeness. And yes, obviously awesomeness has been happening by the truckload! But, life can't always be truckloads of rainbows and unicorns. That truck basically decided to back up and run over my heart a few times over the past few months. So even though we had an amazing trip through South America, Ryan and I ultimately decided it was best for us to split up. Saying goodbye and letting go of my best friend in this life, someone I loved with all my heart and pictured my future with, has been tough. But it's ok. If fate has something else in store for me, then I am looking forward to finding out what that is!

Another huge life change happened as well. I'm now officially a nomad! I am homeless! I seem to be very excited about this given all the exclamation marks I am using haha! I officially moved out of my apartment this week and I'm living in my old bedroom in my parents house until my next trip. Let me tell you, it's a weird feeling to sleep in my childhood twin bed where my feet hang off the edge and a little pink paisley comforter is keeping me warm at 31 years old.

Cue my internal freak-out: Am I a loser? I just moved back in with my parents. I'm over 30. I'm single now and nobody loves me. But hey, pink comforters are really comfy and warm.... and my parents are awesome. Dad makes sure there is an endless supply of yogurt covered raisins in the snack cupboard (I guess I inherited my love of Bulk Barn from Dad) and there are always home baked cookies, brownies and muffins in Mom's kitchen! This is actually pretty sweet. Maybe I will never leave!

And now back to the sunshine and rainbows... I just got back from an amazing trip to Dominican! We were there to celebrate the wedding of one of my dearest friends from high school, Rufina! She married a guy who's just ok... Chad. Hehe just kidding. They are an amazing couple and some of the best people I know.  As a testament to how awesome they are, there was a grand total of 44 people who traveled down south for the wedding! Everyone was so fun to chill and party with. The wedding was held on the white sand beach, looking out towards the teal blue ocean. It was a beautiful, touching, short and sweet ceremony that attracted quite a crowd, even with some onlookers clad in man-speedos and skimpy bikinis!
Me and Feena!

The happy couple!

In between wedding festivities, partying every night, and lounging on the beach I also was able to acomplish one of my bucket list life goals! I finally did my scuba certification. I got to do 4 open water dives, one of which included a shipwreck! I saw beautiful colourful coral reefs, tons of rays, 2 lionfish, cuttlefish, a baby eel, schools of colourful fish and lots of big silvery fish. It took me a few dives to really get used to it and not be freaked out trying to remember to breathe and look at stuff at the same time, but once I got in on the third dive, I felt comfortable and loved it! The ocean is such a whole other world, with seemingly unlimited possibilities of encounters with amazing creatures. I was lucky to be able to explore it, and I hope I can continue this hobby for a long time to come!

Me as Scuba girl!

It was sad to go home from Dominican, since it was great to meet some new people and see lots of old friends too.

But now I'm getting ready for the next adventure.... tomorrow I'm leaving for South Africa!

Costa Rica

The week in Costa Rica was the perfect way to wind down from our big trip in Patagonia. We met up with 5 other friends, and headed to our rental house in the small beach town of Dominical. The house was totally amazing, definitely one of the nicest places I've ever stayed in. I expected J.Lo to pop out and kick us out of her music video set at any time, that's how nice it was!

I finally got to try surfing!!! One of my bucket list items, check! Of course I had envisioned myself cruising across the waves after a few tries, no problem. Maybe even being able to do some neat tricks (handstand would be cool?!) by the end of the week and impressing all my friends with my new found talent. But reality set in after a few hours passed and I was still not able to even stand up... and I had been repeatedly beat down by wave after wave sending salt water straight up my nose, and taking my bikini bottoms clean off! Sorry to everyone I flashed on Dominical beach! My two girlfriends luckily did seem to have the natural surfing talent and were catching a few waves and looking great! Soon they decided to take a break, and I said a silent "thank god" haha, and went with them back to meet the guys on the beach. As I walked back, tripping periodically on my board leash, I decided maybe surfing just isn't my thing...

The rest of the trip consisted of the perfect mix of chilling at the house in the pool, reading an awesomely sappy Nicholas Sparks novel in the hammock, swimming at 2 amazing waterfalls, checking out the National Parks, going to the beach to watch the sunset, monkey spotting in the forest by our house, taking naps, and eating AMAZING food.

Here are a few pictures!

Next stop, Costa Rica!

It's been a little chilly here in Punta Arenas for the last few days. But, it's time to trade in my toque for my bikini! This afternoon we are hopping on the plane to Costa Rica!
